From the East

It’s great to be the master of such a busy lodge! We are definitely hitting the ground running this year. By the end of March we will have initiated 13 new Entered Apprentices and raised our first Master Mason of the year. We are truly blessed to have so many good candidates joining our lodge. Combined with the great brothers we already have, the future of the lodge looks very bright indeed.

We are also hard at work on fundraising for the Masonic Charities. We will be having a huge rummage sale later this year. If you have any hidden treasures to get rid of, please bring them by the Temple and we will put them to good use. This will be the major fundraiser for the year, and we hope to raise several thousand dollars for Oxford and Whitestone. With your donations and help I know we’ll easily make that goal.

I would also like to take a minute to commend Brother Carey Harnash for his new book “Masonic Prayers.” Brother Harnash has spent the last couple years compiling all the opening and closing prayers from every Grand Lodge in the U.S. This book is the product of his hard work and is great to read. As we all know, so much of our work is the same but different. The differences in the prayers are sometimes beautiful and profound. I hope you will all contact Carey at and get a copy for yourselves.

We look forward to seeing you at lodge for a stated or a degree!

Fraternally yours,
JR Yarnall

Hermonic Happenings

Mt. Hermon continues to grow. We initiated five candidates in January and another five in February.

The Asheville Masonic Temple Board is organizing a Friends of the Temple organization to assist with fundraising and events here. We especially need non-Masons and family members.

This year, we are distributing our Trestle Board electronically via email where possible. So, if you are not getting this electronically we probably don’t have your email address; please give us that so we can send you the newsletter that way. We will still mail copies to those without email, but it is much more cost effective to post the Newsletter electronically. In time, we will be able to issue it monthly for more timely information.

Bro. Carey Harnash has published his book of Masonic Opening and Closing Prayers which he has compiled from all 50 states. It is available for $20 from Bro. Harnash (

The Communications Committee is developing various outlets for improving our communications. We encourage you to visit our new blog page at

The AMT is sponsoring a Clean-up Day once a month on Second Saturdays. On March 10, we will work on the Kitchen, and on April 14, we will work on the Lobby and front steps. Anyone interested in helping contact Ron Lambe at 252-3924.

Mount Hermon Lodge #118 was chartered in 1848 by the Grand Lodge of North Carolina. Housed in the Asheville Masonic Temple, our Stated Communication meets on the first Thursday of each month with an open dinner at 6:30pm and the meeting following at 7:30pm.
